Teen Motor Insurance | Auto Insurance Blog | Why Young Drivers Need Quality Auto Insurance
Having a valid auto insurance policy is a requirement in every state in the US in order to legally drive a car. Having quality insurance is important for everyone because it allows us to protect ourselves and our finances in the event of an auto accident. Statistically speaking, young drivers are more likely to be involved in an auto accident than their experienced counterparts and as a result, purchasing quality insurance for young drivers is even more important than for the general population.
We know that insurance can be expensive for young drivers and that you may be tempted to cut corners and purchase the cheapest policy available. And while we encourage you to look for discounts and shop around, we never encourage young drivers to by the cheapest policy possible. You want to make sure your auto insurance covers you completely and that you aren’t left with unexpected expenses after an accident. Make sure your policy includes:
Liability Coverage – this is the portion of your insurance policy that covers any accident related expenses that occur as a result of an accident you cause or are legally responsible for. Talk with your agent and other drivers to make sure you have sufficient liability insurance.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage – is the part of the insurance policy that will pay you and your passengers if someone else causes an accident but doesn’t have enough insurance to cover your medical care, lost wages and pain and suffering. With the current economy it is particular important that you protect yourself and purchase this coverage as more and more people are electing to drive without insurance after a job loss or other financial strains.
Medical Payments Coverage – will cover any accident related medical expenses for you or your passengers regardless of who is responsible for the accident.
Depending on the type of car you drive you may also want to consider purchasing Comprehensive and Collision Coverage. For older vehicles these options may not make sense economically but be sure to consider what the cost would be to replace or repair your vehicle if it was damaged. If the cost is less than or close to the cost of either coverage over a year or two, strongly consider forgoing these options.
As a young driver, we recommend avoiding short cuts to cut costs and encourage you to carefully consider your insurance options when selecting your insurance policy. Being thoughtful will help you select the right policy for your needs.
