Learner’s Permits and Teen Drivers

The learners permit is the first step a minor must take in order to obtain an unrestricted driver’s license. Learner’s permits generally involve a number of requirements which vary by state. These requirements may include:

1. Age – Every state has an age requirement for a minor to obtain a learners permit. The age varies from 14 to 18 years old depending on the state.
2. Parental consent – In order for a minor to obtain a learner’s permit, the minor driver must have parental consent. This is normally verified by the department of motor vehicles when the minor arrives to take a written test.
3. Written Test – Most states require prospective minor drivers to take a written test about the rules of the road, street signs, speed limits and general safety. This test is administered at the department of motor vehicles and successfully competition may allow a minor to obtain his or her learner’s permit.
4. Insurance – Any driver operating a motor vehicle on a public roadway must meet his or her home state’s requirement for liability insurance. The fact that a driver has his or her learner’s permit rather than a full license does not exempt the driver from the requirement.

To graduate from a learner’s permit to a provisional license, drivers must generally complete a specified number of hours driving under supervision. They must also reach a specified minimum age and pass a behind the wheel driving test. Provisional licenses are covered in more detail here (link).
