Five Driver Safety Tips For Teen Drivers

Driving a car is a huge responsibility and taking the steps necessary to stay safe while you are driving is absolutely critical. Here are five driver safety tips for staying safe as a young driver:

1.Be familiar with your vehicle – Maintaining your vehicle and being comfortable with it is a huge part of being a safe driver. Improperly maintained cars regularly lead to accidents. Not using your mirrors effectively may mean that you do not see a vehicle in your blind spot and you cause an accident. Not knowing how much time and space you need to stop your car in a variety of situations can lead to accidents as well.

2.Eliminate distractions – We know it is tempting to text your friend, change the radio station, eat a snack or put on makeup while driving. As we rush around we are all tempted to multi-task. Unfortunately for all drivers multi-tasking can lead to deadly accidents. For new drivers the risk is even higher.

If you need to make a call or respond to a friend, pull over. If you need to change the radio station, wait until you are at a red light. If you are hungry, take a minute to eat before you get on the road.

3.Know where you are going – Being unsure of your destination before you get into your car can cause accidents. Take the time to plan your route before getting on the road.

4.Wear your seatbelt – Wearing your seatbelt is one of the simplest things you can do to stay safe while you are on the road. Plain and simple, seatbelts save lives and take next to no effort to use.

5.Follow the traffic laws – Speeding, running stop signs, making unsafe lane changes, following other cars too closely and passing illegally lead to accidents and deaths on a daily basis. Traffic laws are in place to allow us all to get to and from our destinations safely, when you break the law you are jeopardizing your safety, along with the safety of your passengers and the other people on the road.
